Class 4 impact-resistant roofing
Built for
New Mexico hail.
Ordinary shingles crack under New Mexico hail. Owens Corning Duration FLEX® flexes instead — the highest impact rating there is, and it may earn you a discount on your homeowners insurance.

How it works
Why Duration FLEX® survives hail that wrecks ordinary shingles.
Class 4 isn’t a marketing label — it’s the top result on UL 2218, the industry’s impact test. To earn it, a shingle survives a 2-inch steel ball dropped from 20 feet, again and again, with no crack in the mat underneath. Most shingles can’t pass it. Duration FLEX® does.
The difference is the asphalt itself. A standard shingle turns brittle in the cold and sheds granules when hail strikes. Duration FLEX® blends in SBS — a rubber-like polymer — so it flexes and springs back instead of cracking, and keeps more of the protective granules that shield it from the sun.

Why upgrade
What a Class 4 roof saves you.
A Class 4 upgrade isn’t only about surviving the next storm — it changes the math on insurance, claims, and how long the roof keeps performing. Here’s what you get.
Insurance discount
Many insurers offer a 20–30% discount on your yearly premium for a Class 4 impact-rated roof. Over the life of the roof, that can pay for the upgrade. (Check with your provider before installation — we'll help you document it.)
Fewer claims, fewer deductibles
Moderate hail that would chew up a standard shingle often leaves a FLEX shingle untouched — so you skip the claim and the deductible altogether.
Keeps its granules
FLEX holds onto its protective granules — the surface grit that a normal shingle slowly loses, and ages from, after every storm.
130 MPH wind rating
Same SureNail Technology and wind rating as standard Duration shingles — with the added hail protection of rubber-toughened (SBS polymer-modified) asphalt.
Limited lifetime warranty
Owens Corning limited lifetime warranty, backed by our Preferred Contractor status.
Stronger resale value
A documented Class 4 upgrade — the highest impact rating, name-brand shingles, and a manufacturer warranty — is a selling point buyers and appraisers notice down the road.

Prefer metal?
A standing-seam, R-Panel, or Desert Rib metal roof carries the same UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating. If you’re weighing shingle against metal, we’ll walk you through the trade-offs honestly for your home.

Impact-resistant roofing, answered.
What is a Class 4 impact rating?
Class 4 is the highest impact rating under UL 2218 — the test that fires steel balls at shingles to mimic hail. Duration FLEX earns it through a rubber-toughened asphalt (SBS polymer-modified) that flexes when hail hits instead of cracking.
Will a Class 4 roof actually lower my insurance premium?
Many insurers offer a 20–30% discount on your yearly premium for a Class 4 impact-rated roof. Check with your provider before installation — we'll help you document the upgrade so you can apply for the discount.
How is Duration FLEX different from standard Duration shingles?
Duration FLEX adds a rubber-toughening compound (SBS polymer-modified asphalt) to the standard Duration formula, so the shingle flexes when hail hits instead of cracking or crumbling. You keep the same 130 MPH wind rating and SureNail Technology, with a serious jump in hail protection.
Does a metal roof qualify for Class 4 too?
Yes. A metal roof carries the same UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating as Duration FLEX. If you’re weighing shingle against metal, we’ll give you an honest recommendation for your home — see our metal roofing page for the details.
Is the Class 4 upgrade worth the cost?
It depends on your home and your insurer, but two things often tip it. Many insurers offer a 20–30% discount on your yearly premium for a Class 4 roof — check with your provider before installation — which can offset the upgrade over the life of the roof. And moderate hail that would damage a standard shingle often leaves a FLEX shingle untouched, so you skip claims and deductibles. We’ll give you the exact numbers after a free inspection.
